There is some good news for Williams amid its underwhelming 2026 Formula 1 season: the team has convinced Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon to stay. Announced a day apart, these two deals offer a silver lining in what has been a difficult year for the Grove-based squad.
But dig a little deeper, and there's a nuance behind the headlines. For Sainz, a new multi-year contract has been signed. For Albon, The Race understands no new racing deal has been agreed; instead, his 2027 confirmation is tied to exit clauses already present in his existing contract.
That context matters given Williams' troubled 2026 campaign. The car arrived late, overweight, and slow, with little hope of significant improvement this year. The new regulations were supposed to be a springboard, not a stumble. Yet despite this, both drivers have chosen to stay loyal.

From Williams' perspective, this is sheer fortune. With too many question marks over other midfield options and few signs of driver movement elsewhere, there were no better exit routes for Sainz and Albon. They still believe in the promise shown before 2026, rather than the grim reality of the current season.
For romantics, seeing Williams at the back is painful. Their resurgence was heartwarming, making 2026 a big misstep just as the new era should have borne fruit. Now, Williams heads into 2027 with plenty to prove to its fans and especially to its drivers.
Where else could Sainz have gone? Possibly Audi, but they're not exactly setting the world alight. Better the devil you know, perhaps. Sainz is at a career stage where staying and rebuilding Williams into a competitive team will earn him more respect. With his drive and engineering knowledge, he can point the team in the right direction—the question is whether they will follow.
Williams now has two excellent drivers. If they remain uncompetitive next season, the problems run deeper. This combination of factors makes Sainz's decision to stay logical, even if many doubted it on paper.
