Williams Locks in Albon for 2027, Sainz's Future in Question

Alex Albon has been confirmed to remain with Williams for the 2027 Formula 1 season, extending his tenure to a sixth year. The team announced this as a contract "extension," putting an end to speculation about his future amidst the team's current struggles.

Albon's previous multi-year deal was believed to already cover 2027, but likely included termination clauses relevant to Williams's major difficulties with the FW48—their first car under the new regulations. This decision signals long-term commitment amid grid uncertainty.

The 2025 season has been a tough test for Albon. After a difficult adaptation period, teammate Carlos Sainz has turned the tables in their intra-team battle, now holding the upper hand. Despite this, Williams retains faith in Albon as one of the best drivers on the grid.

New Commitment, Team Confidence

Team principal James Vowles emphasized unwavering trust in Albon. "Alex is one of the best drivers on the grid and knows better than anyone the enormous improvements we have made in recent years. Re-signing him shows the belief we both have in the direction we are heading," Vowles stated.

Albon expressed his delight at staying. "I have a great relationship with the team, both at the factory and at the track. We've hired great people to target areas where we've been struggling. Investment and strategy to empower our workforce are key to reaching the top," Albon said.

However, this announcement only covers 2027, with no clarity on the long term. Attention now shifts to Sainz's future, whose contract also expires soon. Reports from Spanish outlet Marca suggest Sainz is close to extending with Williams, but official details are expected this weekend at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, Williams continues to grapple with the disappointing FW48. A major upgrade is scheduled for Baku, but its impact is expected to be limited. Fundamental improvements are only likely to show in 2027, aligning with Albon's new commitment.
