Williams’ campaign in Formula 1 has been underwhelming thus far, but team principal James Vowles has cause to believe things will be significantly better next year. As F1 switched to new technical regulations this year, the team started the campaign on the back foot, missing the Barcelona pre-season shakedown and initially running an FW48 that was 28kg overweight.
It took more than six months to reach the minimum weight, punctuated by the introduction of a brand-new chassis at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in late September. After finishing fifth in the constructors' championship last year, the nine-time world champion outfit finds itself down in ninth this season with a mere 12 points to its name.
"I own the mistakes that we made this winter," James Vowles said in Malaysia. When asked by Motorsport.com whether he was confident of avoiding similar pitfalls and if the team was in good shape for the upcoming season, the Briton firmly replied that the disaster witnessed during the winter would not happen again.
Part of this confidence stems from the fact that the chassis is already developed and present ahead of time, which makes a considerable difference to the workflow. Vowles also highlighted internal structural updates, including changes to software systems, improved operational workflows, and the arrival of Piers Thynne who has been an absolute godsend help in that regard.
"We have information we just simply didn’t have one year ago that allows us to make a better call on that," James Vowles concluded, as Williams looks ahead to translating its forward-invested chassis development into stronger on-track performance.
