Klaus Zellmer, currently CEO of Skoda, has been named the next president and CEO of Volvo. The announcement ends speculation about who would succeed Hakan Samuelsson, who returned to the helm in March last year for a second stint. Zellmer is set to take office no later than October 1, 2027, with Volvo promising a seamless transition between the two leaders.
For Zellmer, this is no leap into the unknown. The German executive has spent nearly 30 years within the Volkswagen Group, mostly at Porsche, before being entrusted with Skoda in 2022. Over the past four years, he has driven the brand's EV lineup expansion and delivered record growth and profits. That track record is precisely what caught Volvo's attention.
“Few automotive brands have built such a solid and enduring reputation for safety, consistently applying this core value across the entire mobility industry,” Zellmer said in his first remarks about Volvo. It's not just rhetoric. Volvo has long been a pioneer in safety features, from the three-point seatbelt to pedestrian detection, and Zellmer seems intent on making that legacy the cornerstone of his leadership.

Yet the challenges ahead are steep. Volvo has poured significant resources into full-electric technology and software, but has had to revise its ambitious plans due to slower-than-expected EV adoption. It's a scenario playing out across many markets, and Zellmer will need to deftly balance electrification targets with the fluctuating reality of consumer demand.
Hakan Samuelsson, now 75, is reportedly not seeking an extension. At a recent Volvo strategy event, he hinted clearly that the baton would soon pass. His short-term contract was designed to bridge a transition period, and Zellmer's arrival answers Volvo's need for a leader who can carry forward its long-term vision without losing momentum.
It will be fascinating to see how Zellmer translates his Skoda experience into Volvo's DNA. At Skoda, he proved capable of driving profitability while expanding electrification. Volvo, with its premium positioning and different customer base, offers a fresh challenge: preserving a brand identity steeped in safety and sustainability while adapting to a rapidly evolving global automotive landscape.
This leadership change is also drawing industry attention, given Volvo's place under Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Cross-brand collaboration within the group, including potential synergies with Skoda and other Volkswagen Group marques, could be one of Zellmer's ace cards. The public now awaits his first moves once he officially takes charge, especially in shaping product and technology strategy for the coming decade.
