The WorldSBK race weekend at Circuito de Jerez delivered high drama when the Yamaha R1 ridden by Xavi Vierge suddenly burst into flames along the start-finish straight on lap eight. The Spanish rider managed to pull his machine over near the barrier before turn one, allowing track marshals to quickly extinguish the blaze.
According to the team's official statement, a sudden technical problem abruptly ended the promising run where the rider was fighting hard inside the top ten positions. Fortunately, despite the alarming visual spectacle of the fire, the rider emerged completely unscathed from the unexpected mechanical failure.
Yamaha Team Principal Paul Denning stepped forward after the race to clear the air regarding the fiery incident and dismiss any overblown safety concerns. He reassured reporters that the rider did not burn at all, and even his leather suit remained completely undamaged following the quick stop.

Denning elaborated that it was simply a standard engine failure resulting in an oil leak that caught fire upon touching the hot exhaust pipe. He noted that while it looked far more dramatic than the reality of the situation, such thermal incidents can occasionally happen when an engine lets go during maximum acceleration phases.
Unfortunately for the manufacturer squad, the failure struck their highest-running competitor, leaving the garage searching for significant performance steps moving forward. The latest on-track struggles have intensified internal discussions as the team aims to close the competitive gap during the remainder of the championship season.
