Max Verstappen claimed his maiden victory of the 2026 season following a chaotic Formula 1 race at Sepang, officially designated as the Bahrain Grand Prix. Heavy downpours mixed with software glitches on the new-generation cars created a dramatic and unpredictable afternoon.
The race start was delayed by an hour and a half due to electronic issues and a soaked track. Once the field was finally set loose, strategic mastery on intermediate tyres proved decisive. Verstappen, alongside Mercedes duo Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, capitalized on early weather-based gambles.

An intense tactical battle unfolded at the front as the track gradually dried. Russell looked poised for a strong result, but a late technical failure cruelly dashed his podium ambitions and dealt a heavy blow to his early championship aspirations.

A mid-race Safety Car triggered by Valtteri Bottas allowed the field to transition cleanly onto slick tyres. Verstappen handled the pressure expertly to secure a hard-fought victory ahead of Antonelli, marking a thrilling start to the championship chase.
