Max Verstappen has received a significant advantage ahead of the Nurburgring 24 Hours after organisers introduced new Balance of Performance (BoP) adjustments before the race. The latest changes are widely viewed as beneficial for the Mercedes-AMG package used by Verstappen’s team.
Verstappen’s team will start the race from fourth position on the grid following Top Qualifying, while the #84 and #130 Lamborghinis locked out the front row. However, the qualifying results were immediately followed by a revised BoP allocation that altered the competitive balance among several major manufacturers in the SP9 class.
In GT3 endurance racing, the BoP system is designed to equalise performance between different cars through adjustments to minimum weight, engine power restrictions, and aerodynamic efficiency. Cars considered too competitive are typically given performance penalties to maintain parity across the field.

Under the latest revisions, Lamborghini and Porsche have each been handed an additional five kilograms of ballast. Meanwhile, BMW received an even larger penalty of 10 kilograms, making the German manufacturer one of the hardest hit ahead of the race.
BMW arrives at the Nürburgring as the defending race winner alongside one of its star drivers, Kelvin van der Linde. The additional weight is expected to affect braking efficiency and tyre degradation, particularly during long stints around the demanding Nordschleife circuit.
From an engine performance perspective, Lamborghini also suffered the most severe reduction after its engine restrictor size was reduced by half a millimetre. The adjustment directly limits power output and acceleration potential for the Italian GT3 machine on Nürburgring’s long high-speed sections.
Ford was also affected through its twin-restrictor system, with the second restrictor reduced by one millimetre. However, compared to Lamborghini and BMW, Mercedes-AMG emerged relatively unaffected as no additional adjustments were applied to its package.
Although the Mercedes-AMG GT3 remains one of the heaviest cars in the SP9 category at a minimum weight of 1,355 kilograms, the extra ballast added to BMW and Lamborghini has significantly narrowed the performance gap. BMW now sits at 1,350 kilograms, while Lamborghini increases to 1,335 kilograms.
From a technical perspective, the latest BoP changes could benefit Mercedes-AMG over long race simulations, particularly in tyre degradation consistency and handling stability during the night stages. Reliability and tyre efficiency remain critical factors at the Nürburgring 24 Hours due to the extreme and unforgiving nature of the Nordschleife layout.
With the updated BoP regulations now in place, Verstappen’s chances of challenging for overall victory appear considerably stronger. The presence of the Formula 1 world champion has already become one of the biggest storylines surrounding Germany’s most prestigious endurance racing event.
Apakah kemenangan Nurburgring 24H lebih impresif dari gelar F1 Verstappen?
