Verstappen Fires Back at Sainz: Miami Was a Jungle

Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Max Verstappen responded to criticism from Carlos Sainz following the 2026 Miami Grand Prix by describing midfield racing as “a jungle”.

The incident unfolded after the Red Bull Racing driver spun at Turn 2 while battling Charles Leclerc, dropping into the midfield where he encountered Williams drivers Sainz and Alex Albon.

On the opening lap, Verstappen made an aggressive move at Turn 17, diving up the inside of Sainz. The manoeuvre triggered frustration from the Spaniard, who viewed it as overly risky given the tight midfield battle.

From a technical perspective, the opening laps in Miami—with heavy fuel loads and cold tyres—reduce grip margins, meaning aggressive overtakes carry a heightened risk of instability and contact.

“What Max did into Turn 17 felt like a high-risk move. At that moment, I felt we could crash and I lost several positions,” Sainz explained.

In response, Verstappen offered a brief but telling assessment of the midfield environment.

“I don’t know, it’s a bit of a jungle in the midfield, so I don’t know what to say,” Verstappen said.

Despite the controversy, both drivers continued without direct steward intervention. The episode highlights the intensity of midfield racing, where small differences in momentum and positioning can significantly impact race outcomes.

As competition tightens across the grid, aggressive driving and risk management will remain decisive factors in upcoming races, particularly on circuits with similar characteristics to Miami.
