Sepang delivered an absolute thriller of a race that tested the resilience of every driver on the grid. Following a lengthy delay caused by torrential rain and embarrassing software glitches that plagued the paddock, Max Verstappen rose above the confusion. The reigning champion displayed masterclass pace to secure his first victory of the 2026 campaign, extending his remarkable streak of winning at least one Grand Prix every year with Red Bull.
Things did not start smoothly for the Dutchman after dropping from pole to third off the line. However, he quickly carved his way past both Mercedes machines and controlled the race from the front. Behind him, championship leader Kimi Antonelli celebrated a massive result by finishing in second place, extending his championship advantage in the most unexpected circumstances.
Fortune heavily favored the young Italian when his teammate and title rival, George Russell, suffered a devastating power unit failure while running third under a Safety Car. That mechanical heartbreak effectively ended Russell's championship aspirations, leaving Antonelli with one hand firmly on the world title trophy as the season reaches its climax.
Further down the order, Lewis Hamilton delivered a stunning recovery drive. Despite a chaotic opening strategy error from his team, the seven-time world champion capitalized on timely neutralizations and brilliant tyre management to charge through the field, culminating in a brilliant late overtake to claim a hard-earned podium finish.
