Max Verstappen stamped his authority in qualifying for the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. The star driver of Red Bull dominated Q1, Q2, and Q3 to secure his first pole position of the 2026 Formula 1 season, breaking Mercedes' grip on top spots.
The Dutchman's commanding pace left his rivals trailing, outpacing his closest competitor by three tenths of a second. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton capitalized on a perfectly timed run to put his Ferrari on the front row, marking his best grid start since Barcelona.
Red Bull's joy was doubled as Isack Hadjar initially joined the top three. However, Hadjar will serve a five-place grid penalty for taking his seventh internal combustion engine of the year. Conversely, Mercedes suffered its most difficult Saturday afternoon of the 2026 campaign so far.

Despite introducing major upgrades at Sepang, Kimi Antonelli could only manage fourth after a Q2 track limits penalty hampered his tyre strategy. His teammate George Russell languished down in eighth, resulting in the Silver Arrows' weakest qualifying performance of the year.
Further down the grid, the midfield served up plenty of drama, highlighted by Aston Martin's surprise double Q2 appearance and tactical tows. The stage is now set for a thrilling race under intense Malaysian conditions.
