Max Verstappen has finally opened up. The four-time Formula 1 world champion has admitted that he held serious discussions with McLaren and Mercedes before committing his long-term future to Red Bull.
Verstappen's future was one of the biggest talking points in the F1 paddock this season. Speculation raged for months until the Dutchman signed a new contract extension, announced just before his home race at Zandvoort. The new deal keeps him at Red Bull until at least the end of 2030.
In an interview with BBC Sport, Verstappen confirmed for the first time that he did have conversations with rival teams. "Of course, any kind of chat you take seriously. They're all very respectful chats. There's nothing wrong with that," he said. "I felt that staying was, for me, the right choice. You have to follow your heart."
The decision is a bold one, given that the 2026 season has been tough for Verstappen. He has yet to win a race with Red Bull, whose performance has dropped off compared to their dominant years. However, the reigning champion insisted he is not one to shy away from a challenge.
"I could have run away very early on in my Red Bull career and gone somewhere else to try and win. If you have a little bit of patience, you do end up winning. I feel like that's my approach now as well," he explained. He also revealed he often reassured his team: "I always said to them: 'Don't stress about it, just work on the car.' Because the faster the car goes, the easier the decision is anyway."
Verstappen added that he never felt the need to prove himself in another car. "I don't mind the challenge also. I don't have that desire or need to show in another car that I can win it, or whatever," he said. "It's easy to run to the fastest car and then do it all again. But it's not how I am. You cannot be the captain of the ship and as soon as there is something not working, you jump off the ship. It's been a bit downwards from the dominant years, but I don't mind also rebuilding it. It's another challenge as well."
With his future now secured, Verstappen can fully focus on leading Red Bull's resurgence in the remainder of the 2026 season. The big question is whether he can restore the team's former glory amid stiff competition from McLaren and Mercedes, who have been performing strongly.
