A bittersweet atmosphere enveloped Ferrari's red garage during the Italian Grand Prix weekend. On one hand, the Scuderia had to swallow a bitter pill after performing far below expectations in front of tens of thousands of Tifosi packing the Monza circuit. But on the other hand, Andrea Kimi Antonelli's brilliant victory managed to lift the atmosphere in the stands and provide a reason to smile.
Frederic Vasseur, Ferrari team principal, did not hide his disappointment. He admitted that the poor result at their home circuit was a heavy blow, especially after witnessing the incredible enthusiasm from loyal fans since day one. Nevertheless, the Frenchman quickly shifted his focus to the next challenge: the inaugural race on the Madrid street circuit.
Vasseur: We Owe the Tifosi
“Of course we are disappointed not to have been able to give them the result they wanted, after the incredible energy and support they showed us all weekend,” said Vasseur. This statement underscores how much the team understands the high expectations surrounding them at the Italian GP. However, he also highlighted the positive side of the weekend.
“I am very happy for Kimi (Antonelli). This is a very important moment for him and he deserves it,” added Vasseur. The sporting attitude of the Ferrari boss shows that on-track rivalry does not prevent appreciation for young talent. The team's focus is now entirely on the next round.
Immediate Target in Madrid
“Now we immediately shift our attention to next weekend and the new circuit in Madrid,” Vasseur stressed. The street circuit, never before used for an F1 race, will be a new test for all teams, including Ferrari. The opportunity to bounce back is wide open, and the Scuderia is determined to seize it to make amends in front of their home crowd.
The failure at Monza certainly leaves a big homework for the engineers in Maranello. The uncompetitive performance throughout the weekend is a warning that the SF-XX package is still unable to fight consistently at the front. However, with a long calendar ahead and a new circuit demanding quick adaptation, there is always a chance to improve.
Antonelli, now racing for Mercedes, instead emerged as the star at Monza. His first F1 victory came at the legendary Italian circuit, an achievement that will be remembered for a long time. For Ferrari, this serves as a reminder that they must work even harder to restore glory in front of the Tifosi hungry for victory.
