Frederic Vasseur has once again come under scrutiny after his future as Ferrari Team Principal was linked with Christian Horner. The speculation emerged after Horner identified Ferrari as the only Formula 1 team he would consider leading without seeking an equity stake.
Horner made the comments during an interview with The Times while promoting his latest book. His remarks subsequently fuelled discussion over a potential return to the Formula 1 paddock, with Ferrari already facing increased scrutiny following the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Ferrari struggled for performance in Baku, particularly on the straights. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton faced a significant straight-line deficit compared with their rivals, while the SF-26 once again attracted attention after Ferrari failed to deliver the level of performance expected throughout the weekend.
Vasseur subsequently responded to the speculation over the possibility of Horner replacing him. The Ferrari team principal instead linked the emergence of the rumours to Horner's current status outside Formula 1.
“Maybe the rumour is coming because Mr Horner is looking for a job at the moment,” Vasseur said.
Amid the discussion over a potential leadership change, internal Ferrari options have also been mentioned in reports surrounding the situation at Maranello. Antonello Coletta, who leads Ferrari's World Endurance Championship programme, has been identified as one possible alternative. Jerome d'Ambrosio, Ferrari's Deputy Team Principal, has also been mentioned as an internal option.
However, there has been no official decision confirming that Vasseur will be replaced by Horner. Based on the available information, the Horner-Ferrari connection remains speculation following the former Red Bull principal's comments. Vasseur continues to speak publicly in his role as Ferrari team principal.
Attention will now turn to Ferrari's efforts to address the SF-26's performance problems following a difficult weekend in Baku. At the same time, Vasseur's future and the possibility of Horner returning to the Formula 1 paddock will remain subjects of discussion.
