Vasseur Admits Regret Over Ferrari Tyre Blunder in Sepang
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Lewis Hamilton was forced to muscle his way through the field in Malaysia, taking a superb third place and earning Driver of the Day

Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur has conceded there are clear pangs of regret regarding the team’s crucial strategic miscalculation at the start of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Sepang. The premature gamble to bolt dry tyres onto the cars in tricky wet-to-dry conditions immediately compromised the Maranello squad's race prospects.

The race weekend was heavily disrupted by a one-hour rain delay and a further 40-minute hold-up caused by an FIA software glitch. This created an intense tactical standoff on the grid, forcing pit walls into a high-stakes guessing game over whether the damp asphalt warranted wet-weather compounds or slick tyres.

While the vast majority of the field, including polesitter Max Verstappen, safely opted for intermediate tyres, Ferrari rolled the dice with slicks for Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc. This fateful decision backfired instantly, sending both drivers tumbling down the competitive order as the field pulled away from the starting grid.

Reflecting on the botched strategy call after the chequered flag, Fred Vasseur explained the thought process inside the garage. "When you have to take your decision, you are trying to base the decision on good parameters," he stated. "Pero for sure, at the end of the day, we have to be clear, that it was not the right call and that it would have been much better for us to start with the inter." Vasseur noted that roughly half the grid initially looked at dry tyres based on visual checks in the pit lane, though he fully accepted the final outcome was suboptimal.

Despite the early setback, Lewis Hamilton staged a remarkable recovery drive, culminating in a late overtake on Isack Hadjar to salvage a brilliant third-place finish. Teammate Charles Leclerc also fought back courageously to claim fourth, helping mitigate the constructors' championship damage on an otherwise chaotic afternoon.
