Washington, D.C. is set to make history this weekend as it hosts its first-ever IndyCar race, the Freedom 250, marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Adding to the occasion, President Donald Trump is expected to be present and open the race in a symbolic fashion.
US media reports indicate that Trump will wave the green flag to start the race. Not only that, but he will also take a 'lap of honour' in his armored limousine, known as 'The Beast', around the track before the main event begins.
This is not the first time Trump has been involved in motorsport. He previously attended the NASCAR Daytona 500 in 2020 and 2025. The most memorable moment was when he led the formation laps in The Beast, much to the delight of several drivers.
He also attended the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix in 2024, where he was seen speaking with McLaren CEO Zak Brown and race winner Lando Norris.
The idea for an IndyCar race in Washington, D.C. originated from Trump's order in January. He wanted the race as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations. The Freedom 250 will consist of 147 laps on a street course near the Capitol building, at the other end of Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the White House.
Trump's presence will undoubtedly add political and public appeal to this already historic event. It remains to be seen if drivers will react as they did at Daytona, but the spotlight will certainly be on this moment.
