Four decades after the tragic loss of touring car icon Mike Burgmann during the Great Race, the Australian motorsport community is pausing to honour his memory through a powerful mental health initiative. The poignant tribute bridges a dark historical chapter with a bright, proactive movement focused on the well-being of everyone working within the high-pressure environment of the racing paddock.

As part of a partnership with RaceMind Australia—a charity established by Burgmann’s daughter Jade and her partner Gavin—the #79 Toyota Hilux driven by Mork will carry a touching image of Burgmann’s historic Commodore from the 1986 running. This collaboration marks the official launch of The Australian Motorsports Mental Health Foundation, aiming to normalize mental health conversations across national motorsport series.

For Jade, the 40-year milestone serves as both a solemn remembrance and an opportunity to reflect on how the industry protects its people. Speaking to Speedcafe, she emphasized the deep emotional ties her family holds with Mount Panorama. "Bathurst will always be incredibly significant to our family," she stated, expressing her desire for the anniversary to represent a forward-looking mission dedicated to looking after the people behind the cars, bikes, helmets, and race numbers.

Highlighting the unique culture of the racing paddock, Jade noted how quickly team members rally together to fix mechanical issues compared to emotional struggles. "Motorsport people are incredibly good at looking after each other when something goes wrong mechanically. If someone needs a tool, a spare part or another pair of hands, people step in. We want checking on the person standing beside you to become just as normal," she explained, reflecting on the worst day her family experienced in the sport four decades ago.

For Mork, carrying the tribute holds extra significance as he prepares for what will likely be his final events in the V8 SuperUte Series. Having known Burgmann through his previous role as an accountant at the Australian Racing Drivers' Club, the veteran driver is immensely proud to support the new charity before stepping away from full-time competition following the upcoming Gold Coast round ahead of his 80th birthday next year.
