Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has underlined how quickly the competitive order in Formula 1 can shift within a regulation cycle, pointing to McLaren’s resurgence as empirical evidence that fortunes can change within months.
Wolff’s comments followed remarks from Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur regarding cost cap regulations and the convergence of performance seen during the ground-effect era. By the end of the 2025 season, less than one second separated the entire field, highlighting the tightening margins across the grid.
While acknowledging that established teams benefit from accumulated knowledge and infrastructure, Wolff stressed that modern governance mechanisms — including financial controls and aerodynamic testing restrictions — allow competitive recovery at an accelerated rate.

“Totally agree with Fred,” Wolff told media, including RacingNews365, when asked why leading teams still appear to retain advantages under the cost cap.
“Over the years, you gain knowledge, but there are many very competent teams and many very competent people on the grid.
“You can see how quickly you can turn things around.”
Wolff singled out McLaren’s transformation as a case study. After enduring several seasons of underperformance, the Woking-based team returned to competitiveness during 2023 before ultimately claiming constructors’ honours in the subsequent campaign.
“McLaren was really struggling for some years, and then, within a couple of races, the team reemerged like a phoenix, and it has been winning championships since then,” the Austrian noted.
He emphasised that regulatory cycles inherently create windows of opportunity, even for teams currently positioned in the midfield.
“There’s always equal opportunity for everyone.
“Someone who is in the midfield today or is not as competitive as they would wish to be — who knows, six months down the line where they could be.”
As the new season approaches with the Australian Grand Prix, Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull are widely expected to set the early pace. Meanwhile, Haas and Alpine are projected to lead the midfield contingent — precisely the kind of scenario Wolff suggests could evolve rapidly under the right development trajectory.
With a fresh regulatory phase unfolding in 2026, the first half of the season is likely to prove decisive in determining whether another “phoenix” resurgence materialises, reshaping the championship order before mid-year.
