Toto Wolff Vets Three Internal Candidates to Replace Him at Mercedes F1

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has revealed that he is actively vetting two or three current team members to eventually take over his massive operational responsibilities. As the Formula 1 calendar expands to a gruelling 24-race schedule, the billionaire boss is laying down strict groundwork to ensure long-term stability for the Brackley squad.

Having served as the face, political anchor, and strategic leader of the Silver Arrows since 2013, Wolff admits that directly replacing his dual role as Team Principal and CEO of the motorsport division with a single individual is practically impossible given the vast amount of technical, commercial, and driver management duties.

Speaking on the Cheeky Pint podcast, Wolff stressed that his succession plan focuses entirely on the future health of the organization rather than preserving his personal legacy. He aims to divide his current job description among trusted professionals who are already excelling within their respective departments.

"For me, it is not important, you know, to leave a legacy... for me it's important to do what's best for the family and to do what's best for the team, and that means looking at the structure going forward where this team can live without me," Wolff stated.

The F1 paddock previously caught a glimpse of this divided leadership approach back in late 2023 when Wolff missed races in Japan and Qatar due to knee surgery, temporarily delegating trackside duties to Communications Director Bradley Lord and former staff member Jerome d'Ambrosio.

Since Wolff holds a substantial 33 percent equity stake in the team alongside INEOS and Mercedes-Benz, a complete departure from the paddock is unlikely. Instead, a precise transition into an executive or non-executive chairmanship is envisioned to oversee the organization without interfering in day-to-day operations.
