Toto Wolff Hails George Russell's Perfect Austrian GP Drive

Toto Wolff praised George Russell after the Mercedes driver converted pole position into victory at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix, describing his performance as a model of calmness and flawless execution.

Russell led 57 of the race's 71 laps to secure his second victory of the season after also winning the Australian Grand Prix. The result also reduced teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli's lead in the Drivers' Championship to 40 points.

According to Wolff, the foundations for Russell's victory were established in qualifying before being carried into an exceptionally controlled race. He highlighted Russell's speed, tyre management and composure as the key elements behind the win.

"It was very good since qualifying, it was perfect execution. He was quick, managed the tyres well, was cold-blooded, and I am really happy for him," Wolff said.

The Mercedes team principal also revealed that Russell had experienced a difficult spell in recent races, affecting his confidence. As a result, the team encouraged him to simplify his approach and concentrate on extracting the maximum performance from the car rather than overthinking every aspect of the race.

"He knows that he can drive fast, and sometimes you just have to put one and one together and maybe ease off on yourself a bit. It is never good when racing drivers think too much. They are really good at driving, but the thinking part should stay with the people in the garage," he explained.

Wolff added that Mercedes' race plan centred on protecting the rear tyres by exploiting the front axle, while allowing Russell to focus purely on driving rather than strategy calls or gaps to his rivals. In his view, that approach enabled Russell to produce one of his strongest performances of the season.

The victory at the Red Bull Ring provided an important boost for both Russell and Mercedes as the championship battle continues. With improved pace and renewed confidence, the Brackley-based team now heads to the British Grand Prix looking to build further momentum.
