Toto Wolff has explained how George Russell became caught in a "spiral of overthinking" before returning to winning form at the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix. The Mercedes team principal believes the Briton allowed the pressure of the championship battle to distract him from his natural driving instincts.
After winning the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, Russell added only two more podium finishes over the following rounds. During the same period, team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli surged to five consecutive victories, while Russell also lost a likely win in Canada after retiring from the lead with a mechanical failure.
The difficult run prompted Russell to question his ability to extract performance from the W17. However, he responded emphatically in Austria by converting pole position into a dominant victory, signalling a significant turnaround in confidence and execution.

Wolff believes the psychological challenge Russell experienced is common among elite athletes competing in high-pressure environments, particularly when faced with a team-mate enjoying exceptional form.
"It is such a high-pressure environment that you can have a strong team-mate, and that's your year, and then he is so strong, you then have a DNF, and then you're falling behind," Wolff explained.
"I think every top athlete, you can kind of get yourself into a spiral, not of negativity, it is more a spiral of overthinking. 'What can I do more? What do I need? Where do I need to optimise?' and then sometimes, you can forget about the core essence, and this is just driving the car."
According to Wolff, Mercedes has consistently encouraged Russell to simplify his approach by concentrating solely on driving, tyre management and remaining present behind the wheel rather than becoming distracted by strategy or Antonelli's performance.
Russell's victory at the Red Bull Ring demonstrated that approach in practice. With momentum restored, Mercedes heads to the British Grand Prix believing its experienced race winner has successfully emerged from the difficult period and is ready to continue reducing Antonelli's championship advantage.
