Toto Wolff Defends Kimi Antonelli After Austrian GP Errors

Toto Wolff has defended Kimi Antonelli after a series of mistakes during the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix prevented the Mercedes driver from converting his strong pace into victory.

Antonelli started fourth and finished third at the Red Bull Ring. The result kept him in the championship lead, but George Russell's victory reduced his advantage to 40 points.

Across the weekend, Antonelli appeared to have the strongest pace among the Mercedes drivers. However, early-race mistakes and an overly aggressive opening phase cost him crucial time before he recovered and showed highly competitive race speed in the later stints.

Wolff rejected the suggestion that Virtual Safety Car timing had worked against Antonelli. According to the Mercedes team principal, the VSC periods could actually have benefited the Italian had they appeared one lap earlier, but ultimately did not change the result.

"I think the VSCs weren't unfortunate for him. The VSCs could have been very fortunate if they had come a lap earlier, so they didn't make any difference," Wolff said.

The Mercedes boss instead focused on Antonelli's driving performance after the opening laps, arguing that the championship leader still showed the fastest race pace once his initial mistakes were behind him.

"I think his driving was great. Other than the first few laps, he had the quickest race pace. I think he was just too attacking in the first few laps, which we want to see from a young driver like that, but that possibly cost him a shot at victory," Wolff explained.

For Mercedes, Austria still represented a strong weekend as the W17 placed both cars on the podium and strengthened the team's constructors' championship position. For Antonelli, however, the race served as a reminder that outright speed must be matched by cleaner execution if he is to avoid losing further victory opportunities as the season moves to Silverstone.
