Tom Ingram hit the ground running at the opening day of the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) round at Donington Park. The Team VERTU driver was fastest in Friday's free practice, kicking off his comeback mission in perfect fashion.
Ingram arrives at Donington carrying heavy expectations. He trails Ash Sutton in the drivers' standings and needs a near-perfect weekend to close the gap. Starting with P1 in practice is an ideal first step.
Behind Ingram, Mikey Doble surprised by putting his Audi A3 Saloon second. Dan Rowbottom took P3 for team CPRL, who are aiming for a statement weekend. Charles Rainford guided his WSR BMW to P4, while Adam Morgan completed the top five for CPRL.

The session ran smoothly despite a red flag midway through. Josh Cook suffered a trigger wheel failure on his Corolla, briefly halting proceedings. However, no running time was lost as all drivers settled into the Donington weekend.
The practice results set up a blockbuster first qualifying group, with Ingram, Rowbottom, Morgan, Sutton, Tom Chilton, and Dan Cammish all finishing in odd-numbered positions. The returning Dan Lloyd, who finished P17, will also feature.
With an impressive showing in practice, Ingram has clearly signaled his intent to chase down Sutton. But racing is another story. Can he maintain this pace throughout the weekend? We'll find out soon.
