The conclusion to Rally Sardinia certainly left no one unmoved across the WRC paddock. Takamoto Katsuta watched from the sidelines as his team-mates fought an extraordinarily close battle for the title, which eventually went in Elfyn Evans’s favour after an almost unbelievable series of twists and turns throughout the final stages.
It was a bittersweet outcome for Takamoto Katsuta, who was happy for Elfyn Evans but also felt genuine sadness for runner-up Oliver Solberg after such a heartbreaking conclusion to the demanding championship battle.
"What can you say? It was an absolutely crazy, crazy conclusion and end to the season. I have to say they both would have deserved it. Elfyn deserves this world championship, but at the same time I feel so much pain for Oliver. He did everything he could. But that is sport. Someone wins and someone loses," Takamoto Katsuta reflected, as reported by RallyJournal.

Katsuta’s own campaign was remarkably strong, particularly in the opening half of the year. He even led the WRC standings after four rounds, while that excellent run also included the historic first and second top-class victories of his professional career.
"We were effectively right in the championship fight until the middle of the season. After the summer, however, things began to go slightly in the wrong direction. We had a lot of difficulties and were no longer able to continue fighting for the championship," Takamoto Katsuta explained regarding his mid-season slump.
Winning within a powerhouse outfit like Toyota is undeniably a monumental challenge. Elfyn Evans claimed the coveted title, Oliver Solberg finished as the runner-up, and Sami Pajari secured third place in the overall standings.
Furthermore, Sebastien Ogier, who only contested a partial schedule of events, finished fourth, leaving Takamoto Katsuta to ultimately settle for sixth place in the final WRC drivers' championship.
"The car is fantastic and the team is strong, but at the same time the drivers are extremely tough. You can imagine how many champions there are in the team now. It will be difficult, but that is exactly why it is called the World Rally Championship," Takamoto Katsuta noted.
The Japanese driver endured a difficult finish to the year, scoring a meager 24 points across the final five rounds. Acknowledging his flaws, Takamoto Katsuta emphasized that he must learn to bounce back stronger from setbacks like his misfortune in Paraguay to secure better consistency moving forward.
