Supercars Explains Triple Eight Restrictor Blunder

Ford factory team Triple Eight Race Engineering has finally found the culprit behind Will Brown's lackluster start to the season. It turns out a small component was incorrectly fitted, costing him valuable performance.

According to the team, an incorrect airflow restrictor was supplied by Supercars and has been fitted to the Ford engine in Brown's car throughout the season. The restrictor, which should have been larger, was one millimetre smaller than the standard specification.

The impact? Triple Eight claims a significant performance disadvantage, averaging 0.15 seconds per lap. A figure that is certainly significant in the competitive Supercars series.

Supercars has now responded to Triple Eight's claim. In an official statement, they acknowledged that the component was loaned to the team for its pre-season launch event in Geelong in February, intended for demonstration purposes only, not for racing.

"Supercars acknowledges the finding that car 888 has competed during the 2026 Supercars season with an air restrictor that is one millimetre smaller in size than is prescribed for the Ford Mustang," the statement read. "The component was loaned by Supercars to Triple Eight Race Engineering (T8RE) for demonstration purposes only at the team's launch in February," it added.

The restrictor was only discovered during preparations for the upcoming event in Ipswich, having been used since the Perth Super 440. Routine scrutineering checks, which are carried out at random, had not selected the component for inspection until now.

Supercars has promised to review its technical procedures going forward. Meanwhile, Triple Eight emphasized that they proactively reported the finding, and Supercars appreciated that. The question now is whether this will affect the championship standings. We'll have to wait and see.
