Rookie sensation Pedro Acosta described the Japanese Grand Prix as his first truly difficult race in a very long time after a strange issue left him struggling to secure a seventh-place finish at Motegi, according to Motorsport.com.
Fresh off his maiden victory, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider endured a relatively lackluster Sunday afternoon despite showing strong single-lap pace to qualify on the front row of the grid.
Racing on the hard rear tyre like the rest of the field, Acosta immediately dropped two places on the opening lap before slipping down to eighth. Although he mounted a brief comeback to overtake Ai Ogura and Raul Fernandez, the Trackhouse riders quickly demoted him back down.

"It was a tough one; a really long time without a tough one," Acosta said. "It looks like we didn't match the bike with the tyres. I don't know why I was struggling a lot to stop the bike and even then, to try to have some grip in the drive area."
Acosta wasn't fully convinced that the change in tyre construction was the sole reason behind his lack of pace, emphasizing the need to analyze telemetry data to understand the mysterious handling traits.
"I don't think that just changing the tyres meant Enea was that fast and I was that slow. There has to be something around what we don't really know," he added. "Really strange. Now we have to check all the data with the team, because it's something that was the first time that I have this feeling."
