Lando Norris snatched pole position in the dying seconds of Q3 at the Spanish Grand Prix, and Andrea Stella called it one of the best laps he has ever witnessed. The McLaren team principal could not hide his admiration for the British driver's feat, which came out of nowhere after he had seemed out of contention.

At the new Madrid circuit, where overtaking is nearly impossible, pole position is as good as a golden ticket to victory. Norris, the reigning world champion, knew the value of the moment. But the race did not go to plan. A Virtual Safety Car at the wrong time ruined his chances, and he had to settle for third place.

Still, Stella's praise is worth noting. “I would say that for the risk he took following such an incredible lap, he was almost lenient on himself,” Stella told media, including Motorsport Week. “But Lando has developed a lot of emotional racing resilience, and he is able to access the best of his potential more regularly, and he’s able at times to elevate the game to a further level.”

Stella, who has watched telemetry at 450 grands prix, did not hesitate to rank the lap among the very best. “I would say that it was one of the most impressive laps I’ve witnessed,” he continued. “The most impressive thing is that it was pole position, despite having lost three-and-a-half tenths in the last corner, which means it could have been a pretty convincing pole position.”

Stella's analysis did not stop there. He highlighted Norris's metre-by-metre precision. “When you look at the telemetry, it is the precision, the braking, the speed carried on entry, the striking of the kerb, the going on power,” he explained. “Everything was executed with a pretty unique level of precision, and for me, the main attribute that would be associated with this lap was just incredible precision in the metre-by-metre execution. I think Lando offered one of the best performances of his career.”

This praise, while significant, will do little to quell the disappointment in the McLaren camp after losing the Spanish Grand Prix victory due to factors beyond their control. But at least the pole moment serves as a reminder that Norris is pushing his limits to a new level.
