Formula 3 qualifying at Monza this weekend delivered double drama. Freddie Slater clinched pole position for the Feature Race, while title rival Ugo Ugochukwu was dealt a severe blow, starting from the back after receiving a double grid penalty. Early at the historic Italian circuit, Slater (Trident) was in scintillating form. He set the fastest time of 1:38.114 in Group B, enough to secure the front spot for Sunday's main race. However, the spotlight was on an incident that occurred earlier during free practice.
The incident involved Ugochukwu, who sits second in the standings and is locked in a tight fight with Slater. In a move widely condemned as reckless, the American driver pushed Matteo De Palo towards the barrier shortly after the chequered flag in practice. That action earned him a five-place grid penalty for both the Sprint and Feature Races.
Ironically, in Group A, De Palo was in fine form, setting the fastest time of 1:38.143. But Ugochukwu failed to capitalize on his potential. He made a mistake at the first chicane and could only manage 10th place, before the penalty dropped him even further down.
This qualifying drama is a major setback for the Campos team, which not only lost Ugochukwu's grid position but also saw Theophile Nael start from the back after a separate incident. Meanwhile, Slater now stands on the verge of a huge advantage. With a slim points lead, every remaining race will be crucial. Can he seize this golden opportunity to extend his lead in the standings?
