Simone Resta has explained why Mercedes adopted a different development approach during the 2026 Formula 1 season, with a greater part of its W17 upgrade push deliberately weighted towards the second half of the campaign after the summer shutdown.
While Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull introduced significant packages earlier in the year, Mercedes began the season with a strong baseline before adding smaller updates incrementally. Its first major in-season package arrived in Canada, featuring changes to the front wing, endplates, corner assemblies and floor elements.
“Ultimately, I think we tried to have strong development for the first race from the winter test,” Resta said. “Then we have had, at almost every race, a little step here and there, and then another big step in Canada.”
The approach forms part of a deliberate strategy to place more development weight on the second half of the season. Toto Wolff previously confirmed that Mercedes had chosen to reserve more of its development potential for later in the campaign. “We've tried to have it a little bit more second half of the season weighted. And we'll see if that is enough,” he said.
Mercedes' strategy has so far still left the team in a strong constructors' championship position. The Brackley squad leads the standings, although Ferrari has prevented that advantage from expanding significantly. The gap stood at 70 points after Miami and has only increased to 72.
That makes Mercedes' post-shutdown package an important test of whether its development philosophy will pay off. Its rivals have already deployed several substantial upgrades during the opening half of the season, while Mercedes still intends to introduce another more significant step.
“Probably, after the shutdown, we will try to focus on having something more sizeable on the car,” Resta said. “We are clearly focused on trying to develop the car at every event, but also trying to think bigger by bringing another step to the car.”
With Mercedes still leading the championship but facing sustained pressure from Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull, the effectiveness of its next major package could determine whether its more measured early-season development programme delivers an advantage during the decisive phase of the 2026 F1 title fight.
