Formula E, Sportrik Media - Sam Bird has described the upcoming Gen4 car as a “game-changer” for Formula E, marking a major leap in performance and technology ahead of the series’ next regulatory era.
The all-electric championship is currently approaching the midpoint of its 12th season, the final campaign featuring Gen3 Evo machinery. From next season, the introduction of Gen4 will signal a new regulatory cycle, with the car representing a significant step forward for the category.
The Gen4 car is set to be officially unveiled at Circuit Paul Ricard during a closed event for selected media. While full technical details remain limited, key specifications already indicate a substantial increase in capability compared to its predecessor.

Producing 600 kW of power—equivalent to over 815 horsepower—the Gen4 car will feature permanent all-wheel drive, multiple aerodynamic configurations, and tyres supplied by Bridgestone. Top speeds are expected to exceed 200 mph (321 km/h), placing it closer to the performance window of Formula 1.
Bird, who competed in Formula E for 11 seasons, believes the Gen4 platform will elevate the championship both technically and in terms of global appeal.
“I think what Formula E is doing now is exactly right—growing steadily,” Bird said on Lucas Stewart’s YouTube channel.
“The Gen3 car has been good, but the Gen4 car—I’ve just come back from testing it—is a beast. 600 kW, all-wheel drive, over 815 horsepower. This thing will do well over 200 mph. It’s a game-changer.”
He also emphasized the importance of controlled growth, suggesting that long-term success depends on strong manufacturer involvement and continuous technical progression rather than rapid expansion driven by heavy spending.
With projected lap times expected to fall between those of Formula 1 and Formula 2, the Gen4 car is set to significantly narrow the performance gap among top-tier single-seater categories. This development is likely to enhance competitiveness and broaden the championship’s audience.
Bird concluded that the Gen4 era could represent a turning point for Formula E’s identity as a premier racing series.
“In the Gen4 era, we’ll see more fans really enjoy Formula E for what it is—a top-level, fast single-seater racing series,” he added.
As Formula E prepares to enter its next phase, the Gen4 car stands as a critical milestone in the evolution of electric motorsport, with its impact expected to reshape both performance standards and the championship’s global profile.
