Carlos Sainz has delivered a clear message to Williams junior driver Will Green, who is preparing to step up from karting to single-seaters. In an exclusive interview conducted by Green himself for the Williams YouTube channel, Sainz emphasised the importance of chasing limits over playing it safe.
"Don't be afraid to make mistakes. It's better to push too hard and make mistakes than try and be too conservative," Sainz said. "You are at the age where it's important to learn as much as possible. So, don't be scared."
Green, who was recently crowned the 2026 Karting European Championship junior champion, officially joined the Williams Racing Academy in December 2024. That achievement marked an impressive early step for the 13-year-old, but the transition to formula cars often proves to be the real test for young talents.
Sainz, who has extensive Formula 1 experience with top teams, understands the pressure young drivers face. He recounted his own experience when moving from karting to cars. "I felt that going from karting to cars was quite natural to me. It didn't feel weird," he recalled. "You will jump in a car one day. They will teach you how to drive with the gears, with everything. The first two laps will be strange but then your natural instinct of just pushing flat out whatever they give you will kick in and you will find a way."
Sainz's advice is not just empty motivation. In junior racing, the ability to find the car's limit often separates those who rise to the top from those who fall behind. Consistency is important, but without the courage to take risks, a driver will never know how far they can go. "Always try to be as close to the limit as possible. Don't do anything stupid, but go and take risks because when they pay off, you feel a lot of confidence, and that's where your talent multiplies," Sainz added.
For Williams, investing in Green is part of their long-term strategy to build a strong team foundation. With guidance from a driver of Sainz's calibre, Green has a golden opportunity to hone not only technical skills but also a champion's mentality. The Williams Academy has already produced several talented drivers, and Green's presence adds new hope for the team's future.
The transition from karting to formula is indeed full of challenges. Differences in vehicle characteristics, technical complexity, and higher competitive pressure demand rapid adaptation. However, with the right approach and support from the team and experienced mentors, Green is on a promising path. Sainz is optimistic that by taking risks, Green can maximise his potential.
