Carlos Sainz Jr. has expressed his relief after seeing Charles Leclerc escape uninjured from a heavy crash during the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. The Williams driver, who was involved in the same race, admitted he was concerned for his former Ferrari teammate following the high-speed incident that brought out the red flag.
The crash disrupted strategies for many drivers. Sainz eventually crossed the line in 13th place, while teammate Alex Albon finished 17th. Despite the lack of points, Sainz believes the team showed encouraging pace at the ‘Temple of Speed’, considering the car’s current limitations.
“First of all, I’m happy to see Charles (Leclerc) unhurt after such a big accident. From our side, we had a very good race and a positive weekend overall, considering our limitations. Yesterday we had a solid qualifying and today we had a good start and good race pace,” said Sainz, as reported by FormulaPassion.
A well-timed pit stop under the Virtual Safety Car allowed Sainz to jump ahead of Esteban Ocon, thanks to a swift stop from his mechanics. He later overtook Oliver Bearman in the closing laps. However, Albon’s gamble on a one-stop strategy using only hard tyres after the red flag did not pay off as hoped.
“We tried to push hard and use only one set of hard tyres, but inevitably we had some degradation towards the end. It was worth the risk. The race pace was the best we’ve had for a while, thanks to the new power unit we had this weekend, but it also shows what we have and what we need to do to achieve our targets,” the Spaniard explained.
Sainz is now looking ahead to the next round in Madrid, acknowledging that it will be a completely different challenge. Still, the progress shown at Monza gives Williams some encouragement as they continue their fight in the midfield.
