Sainz accepts 'fair' penalty for Albon clash at Dutch GP

Carlos Sainz has shouldered the blame for making contact with his Williams team-mate Alex Albon at the end of the Dutch Grand Prix, a collision that earned him a 10-second penalty. The incident occurred four laps from the finish when Albon attempted a pass around the outside of Turn 1, only for Sainz to lock up and slide into his team-mate.

Sainz admitted the penalty was justified, explaining that a bump on the inside of the corner triggered the lock-up. "It was a fair penalty," Sainz said. "I had a bit of a surprise when I went to defend. I had really worn hard tyres, struggling a lot with the car. And when I went to brake on the inside, there was a massive bump. As soon as I touched the brakes, I locked up and I took Alex with me, which is the worst possible outcome for that race."

The contact damaged the side of Albon's floor, forcing him to pit, while Sainz continued but finished well down the order. Both Williams drivers were running at the back of the pack, 15th and 16th, ahead of only Sergio Perez. Albon downplayed the incident, referencing the infamous clash between Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo at the 2018 Azerbaijan GP as more severe.

Albon was more frustrated by Williams' missed opportunity to score their first points since Monaco in June. "The biggest frustration is the race itself, because I think we were in a good race," Albon said. "We were in front of Fernando for most of that race. Maybe not with this pace, but I think we boxed too early. We came out behind a group of seven or eight cars. I need to understand why we boxed so early, because we genuinely had a chance to score points today."

Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso capitalized on a one-stop strategy to snatch an unexpected ninth place for Aston Martin, highlighting their improved pace.

The clash adds to Williams' struggles as they remain rooted to the bottom of the standings. The team will need to address their strategic decisions and car performance to compete for points in the upcoming races.
