MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Sachsenring is undergoing targeted safety upgrades ahead of the 2026 German MotoGP following last season’s Moto2 incident involving Diogo Moreira and David Alonso.
The seven-week construction programme is primarily focused on modifying run-off areas, with sections of grass verge being replaced by asphalt. This change is intended to reduce the risk of riders losing control when running off track, while also providing a more stable and predictable path for rejoining the racing line.
The updates are a direct response to the Moto2 collision at the Omega corner (Turn 3), where Moreira ran wide after contact with Jake Dixon. As he rejoined at reduced speed, he was struck from behind by Alonso, highlighting the dangers associated with inconsistent grip levels between track and verge surfaces.
“When riders leave the track, they can lose control on the verge. Therefore, a safer route is being created so they can return in a controlled manner,” said Dr Lutz Oeser of Sachsenring Event GmbH, as quoted by Speedweek.
Additional work is being carried out at the high-speed Sachsen Kurve, the fast left-hander following the Turn 11 ‘Waterfall’ section. Improvements to drainage systems are also underway, addressing concerns raised during recent wet-condition events, where water management became a critical factor for safety and consistency.
Marshal access points are being expanded to ensure faster intervention during incidents, forming part of a broader effort to enhance operational safety standards across the circuit. The total cost of the upgrades is estimated at €300,000, with half funded through local government support.
These measures reflect a proactive approach to circuit safety, aligning with ongoing evaluations by organisers and governing bodies to mitigate risk in high-speed racing environments. Sachsenring remains under contract to host MotoGP until at least 2031.
The 2026 German MotoGP is scheduled for July 10–12, serving as the final round before the summer break. The effectiveness of these upgrades will be closely monitored as the championship enters a critical phase of the season.
