Ryo Hirakawa was involved in a pit lane incident during the opening Formula 1 practice session for the 2026 Austrian Grand Prix after making slight contact with a mechanic from Haas F1 Team.
The Japanese driver, who was driving in place of Esteban Ocon during FP1, reportedly overshot his pit box before clipping the front-left mechanic as he returned to the garage. The incident was not shown on the official television broadcast.
The mechanic immediately got back to his feet following the contact. Haas later confirmed that the impact was only very slight and that the crew member was unhurt.

FP1 at the Red Bull Ring also formed part of Formula 1's mandatory rookie programme. Alongside Hirakawa, five other young drivers took part in the opening session as their respective teams fulfilled the season's rookie running requirement.
Although the incident had no serious consequences, it highlighted the importance of precision when entering the pit box. The pit lane remains one of the busiest working environments during a race weekend, making communication and accurate braking critical elements of operational safety.
