Budget airline Ryanair has taken a cheeky swipe at Lance Stroll following his contract extension with Aston Martin for the 2027 Formula 1 season. In a post on X, Ryanair wrote, "Lance Stroll [and] Ryanair passengers, both paying for their seats." The jab quickly went viral among F1 fans.
The Canadian driver's new deal was confirmed on Tuesday, keeping him alongside two-time world champion Fernando Alonso at the Silverstone-based team. This will be Stroll's ninth consecutive season with the team owned by his father, Lawrence Stroll.
Stroll has often been the subject of jokes due to his father's financial influence on his career. Lawrence Stroll secured his son's F1 seat at Williams for 2017 with a substantial financial package, and later acquired Racing Point (now Aston Martin) in 2019. Critics frequently point to Stroll's inconsistent performances and label him a 'pay driver'.
In an official statement, Stroll expressed his delight at continuing with the team. "I'm very happy to continue with Aston Martin Aramco for the long term. I've been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team," said the 27-year-old.
He added, "There is so much hard work going on at Silverstone with real progress being made, and the determination I see in every department is a huge motivation for me. I know we are heading in the right direction, and my commitment is stronger than ever to help us achieve our goals."
Executive chairman Lawrence Stroll emphasized the importance of retaining both drivers. "Lance and Fernando have been a crucial part of our journey and we are very pleased to confirm that they will continue with us into the next chapter for the team. Having two drivers with their level of experience, commitment and knowledge provides tremendous value to the whole organisation," he said.
He continued, "We are here to win, and whilst our short-term focus remains on improving performance, I believe we have the world-class talent we need to achieve our long-term objectives."
The contract extension has sparked debate among fans, given the team's inconsistent performances. However, with full backing from management, Stroll has the opportunity to prove he belongs at the top level. The 2027 season will be a test for Stroll to silence doubters and push Aston Martin further up the grid.
