The 2025 season has become a heavy mental test for George Russell. Even though Mercedes is performing strongly at the front of the field, Russell's form has been inconsistent. Former F1 driver David Coulthard believes Russell must quickly escape the negative phase he calls 'overthinking' to avoid falling further behind in the title fight.

Russell started the season brilliantly, winning the season-opening Grand Prix in Melbourne. However, since then, he has only managed one more victory. Meanwhile, his teammate, Kimi Antonelli, has been impressive with six wins and leads the standings with a 59-point margin at the halfway point. This situation makes Russell's title hopes increasingly slim.

On the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard highlighted the many misfortunes that have befallen Russell, from reliability issues to on-track incidents. "It's been a shocker," he said. "How much bad luck can one person have? On one side, the team has to work through that bad luck. On the other side, George is now not on the crest of a wave."

Coulthard compared Russell's situation to a tennis player who misses an easy smash because they start overthinking. "George is in that phase of the season where Kimi is just instinctively driving and having, other than Barcelona, some pretty good reliability, whereas George has been taking the punches," he explained.

Interestingly, Coulthard believes Antonelli's lack of F1 experience is an advantage. "Experience is a good thing, but the benefit of youth is you don't know what you don't know," he said. "The downside of experience is you do know the challenges and the difficulty and momentum and all those good things."

Although he acknowledged that a comeback is still possible, as Max Verstappen showed last year, Coulthard is pessimistic about Russell's chances. "Not even Sylvester Stallone would write a Rocky movie with that sort of comeback from all the punches that he's taken," he said. "So it's going to be a character-building year for George."

With increasing pressure, Russell is required to bounce back quickly. If not, the world championship could slip further away, and the internal battle at Mercedes will intensify.
