Russell Tops Italian GP FP2, Leclerc Slips to Second

George Russell was the fastest driver in the second free practice session (FP2) for the Italian Grand Prix at Monza on Friday, edging out Charles Leclerc who had set the pace in FP1.

Mercedes Dominates Practice

Russell and his teammate Kimi Antonelli initially dominated the timing screens, but Antonelli will start from the back of the grid on Sunday due to an engine penalty. Despite that, Russell showed consistency by topping the session twice on soft tyres.

Leclerc briefly split the Mercedes duo with his best lap, but a big mistake at the Variante della Roggia chicane cost him valuable time and dropped him to second.

Max Verstappen complained about a lack of downforce and grip throughout the session, finishing ninth behind Ollie Bearman, who impressed for Haas.

Championship Context and Impact

The result gives Mercedes a confidence boost, while Ferrari shows promising pace at their home circuit. With Antonelli set to start from the back, Russell's chances of winning the Italian GP look stronger.
