George Russell closed the second free practice session of the Italian Grand Prix with the fastest time. The Mercedes driver beat the Ferrari duo of Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli at the iconic Monza circuit on Friday.
Russell was dominant in the session, setting a 1:22.559 lap to finish ahead of Charles Leclerc in second. Kimi Antonelli took third, much to the delight of the passionate tifosi crowd.
This performance is a positive sign for Mercedes. With Lewis Hamilton set to start from the back of the grid on Sunday, Russell has a golden opportunity to lead the team's charge for victory. He was consistent throughout the session, topping the timesheets on multiple occasions before locking in the fastest lap.
The session wasn't without incident. Lewis Hamilton, who was quickest in FP1, struggled in FP2 and could only manage fourth late in the session. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen, back in his car after Ayumu Iwasa took over in FP1, has yet to find his best form and was further down the order.
Incidents and Key Moments
In the closing stages, Charles Leclerc had a heart-in-mouth moment when he ran wide and spun in the gravel. Fortunately, he kept the car out of the barriers and continued without serious damage. Franco Colapinto also had a moment, bouncing over the kerbs and through the gravel, but he too saved his car.
Gabriel Bortoleto was called into the pits due to an issue with the newly fitted internal combustion engine (ICE) in his Audi. This gives his team work to do before qualifying.
With this result, Russell has sent a strong message to his rivals that he is ready to be competitive at Ferrari's home turf. Can he maintain this form through to Sunday? We'll have to wait and see.
