George Russell will start the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix from pole position after dominating qualifying at the Baku City Circuit. However, the spotlight fell on his Mercedes teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who crashed in Q1 and will start from 16th.
Antonelli, who leads the drivers' standings by 81 points over Russell, arrived in Baku with momentum after back-to-back wins at Monza and Madrid. But this weekend has been all Russell. The British driver has been flawless since free practice, cementing his status as the overwhelming favourite to win the race and reignite his title hopes.
Antonelli's incident occurred in Q1 when he lost control of his car and hit the barriers. The damage forced him out of the session, meaning he will start from the back of the grid. It's a huge blow for the championship leader, especially since Baku is known for being difficult to overtake on.
At the front, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari will start second, aiming to challenge Russell early. Meanwhile, McLaren's Oscar Piastri lines up third, adding to the fierce competition at the front. The surprise came from Red Bull's Isack Hadjar, who put his car fourth in his first race back after a hand injury that sidelined him for three rounds.
Hadjar's teammate, Max Verstappen, looked like Russell's biggest threat early in qualifying. However, an engine issue meant he could only manage eighth. The Dutchman has taken fresh power unit components for the race, but they are from his pool, so he will not drop down the order. Nevertheless, he faces a tough task to carve through the field.
Baku always delivers drama. The slipstream is immensely powerful this weekend, making overtaking down the massive main straight plentiful. However, safety cars are also a high possibility. With Antonelli and Verstappen starting out of position, this race could be one of the most thrilling of the season.
If Russell can convert pole into a win, he will significantly close the gap to Antonelli. Conversely, if Antonelli can charge from 16th, he could extend his lead. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix will be a true test for both Mercedes drivers in their 2026 title fight.
