George Russell has shared intriguing details about a getaway with six other Formula 1 drivers to Langkawi Island, Malaysia, ahead of this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. In an Instagram post, the Mercedes driver posted photos from the trip with Oscar Piastri, Alex Albon, Oliver Bearman, Carlos Sainz, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Lando Norris.
The photos show the group posing in front of a waterfall, go-karting, and playing chess, as well as Norris filming his McLaren teammate, presumably for his Prime docuseries. The relaxed and laughter-filled atmosphere was evident on the faces of the drivers who usually compete fiercely on track.
Speaking to media, including Motorsport.com, at a press conference at the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Russell explained that the itinerary was influenced by Mercedes title partner Petronas. "Langkawi was incredible. I love coming to Malaysia. We come numerous times per year, and everybody at Petronas many times have recommended to go and visit the beautiful island of Langkawi," the 28-year-old said.
"So we went with six other drivers, and we had a really amazing time. It's such a beautiful, beautiful place. The people are so friendly, and it felt like a different world being there. So I really enjoyed that, and it was the perfect way to prepare for this week," he added.
Meanwhile, Russell's teammate, Kimi Antonelli, also arrived early in Malaysia but chose to explore Kuala Lumpur and go to a water park. "I had a lot of fun," the current championship leader explained. "There were few people, so I could go on the slide repeatedly. I did the same slide five times in like three minutes, so I was just running up and down. It was good."
Antonelli also admitted he hasn't tried any traditional food yet because he wants to wait until after the race weekend. "I didn't try any traditional food because, yeah, maybe after the weekend..." he said. Currently, Antonelli leads the standings with a 66-point advantage after Russell's win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
This activity showcases the human side of F1 drivers who are often seen tense on track. This short vacation serves as a refresher before facing the pressure of the Bahrain GP. With tight competition this season, camaraderie off the track could be key to the drivers' mental balance.
The Bahrain GP in Malaysia itself will be a crucial test for the teams, especially Mercedes, who are in good form. Russell and Antonelli are expected to continue their positive momentum. Meanwhile, the other drivers who joined the trip also hope to bring positive energy into the race.
