George Russell produced a masterclass under pressure to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, holding off a charging Max Verstappen in a tense drag race to the line. The Mercedes driver controlled the race from the front, but two late safety cars set up a thrilling finish in Baku.
Russell survived two safety car restarts and resisted Verstappen's late charge to claim his third victory of a challenging 2026 season by just a tenth of a second. It was his eighth career F1 win and saw him reduce the gap to team-mate and championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
Antonelli, who started 16th after a qualifying crash, fought back to fifth to limit the damage. The Italian still holds a comfortable 66-point lead with eight races remaining. Isack Hadjar finished third, claiming his second podium of the season on his return from a wrist injury.
Ferrari lacked the pace to challenge for the podium, with Charles Leclerc dropping from second to fourth. Lewis Hamilton finished sixth. Rookie Arvid Lindblad snatched seventh from Esteban Ocon at the death, while Carlos Sainz recovered from a grid penalty to take the final point.
