Kalle Rovanpera got back behind the wheel of a Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 in Tennessee, USA, last weekend. It was a rare moment for the two-time world champion from Finland, who last drove his winning machine at the end of last season before stepping away from the WRC.
Rovanpera wasn't competing, but instead gave VIP passenger rides at an event. Even in a demo run, the thrill of the Rally1 car immediately reminded him of what he'd been missing. "You don't need to drive a car like this for very long before you realise that you missed it," he told DirtFish.
He also compared the experience to driving Jonne Halttunen's car in Finland. "It was nice driving Jonne Halttunen’s car in Finland, but this was different," he added. Rovanpera admitted he enjoyed every second. "It was a good day, the road was nice. I was able to drive it a few times to make sure I knew it and then I was just driving and enjoying."
However, behind the smile, Rovanpera's future with Toyota and in the WRC remains a mystery. His contract with the Japanese manufacturer is up for renewal, and talks are ongoing. "Nothing is decided for next year. I’m talking with Toyota about what’s possible," he said.
Since deciding to take a hiatus from the WRC at the end of 2025 to pursue his circuit racing dreams, speculation about his next move has been rife. His long-awaited Super Formula campaign fell apart before it even began due to health concerns. Now, with his return to a Rally1 cockpit, the big question is: does this signal a full-time return to rallying, or just a brief visit before heading back to the tarmac?
One thing is clear: his appearance in Tennessee proves that the emotional bond with Toyota and the world of rallying hasn't completely faded. For fans, seeing Rovanpera behind the wheel of a Yaris Rally1 is always a sight for sore eyes. Will we see him on the WRC stages again next season?
