Rosberg Warns Antonelli of Mounting Pressure in F1 2026 Title Fight

Andrea Kimi Antonelli is enjoying a stellar debut season with Mercedes, leading the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' championship by 81 points over teammate George Russell. However, behind the impressive performance, the shadow of pressure looms. 2016 F1 champion Nico Rosberg has issued a warning that the situation could change drastically if McLaren and Ferrari step up their game.

Rosberg, who experienced the intensity of a title fight firsthand, sees the possibility of Antonelli becoming "more and more panicked" if he starts to drop back into the pack. Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 Show, Rosberg painted a worst-case scenario: McLaren pulling away and Ferrari improving, leaving Antonelli feeling vulnerable.

"The worst-case scenario is if suddenly McLaren starts to edge away and maybe there's also a Ferrari improvement, and that Kimi starts to drop back into the pack a little bit more," Rosberg said. "That is similar to where I was in my championship year because I was not driving as well. I started to drop back into the pack in those last four races."

Antonelli himself recently won the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit, thanks to a well-timed virtual safety car. However, he admitted that the win was not entirely satisfying because without the VSC, McLaren's Lando Norris would likely have taken victory. This admission shows that Antonelli is aware of the fragility of his position.

Rosberg, who had a fierce battle with Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, knows how pressure can change dynamics. He recalled how at the end of 2016, he was often in third place and had to fight hard against Max Verstappen. "If he were to drop back into the pack ever so slightly again, the risk just comes up, and you start to get more and more panicked," he added.

With 15 races remaining, including the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on 24-26 September, Antonelli must maintain consistency. If McLaren and Ferrari truly improve, the pressure will mount. Can Antonelli handle it, or will he suffer the same fate as Rosberg, who nearly lost the title? Only time will tell.
