Max Verstappen appeared untouchable throughout the Formula 1 weekend, yet a sizeable piece of metal made a very decent attempt at derailing his dominant charge. Nothing seemed capable of stopping the Red Bull driver at the Sepang International Circuit until an unexpected hazard emerged in the pit lane.
The race was thrown into severe disarray after a botched start procedure forced drivers to be called back into the pits. Software updates were urgently required to eradicate a persistent bug that caused farcical scenes on the initial formation lap, setting a chaotic tone for the afternoon.
As Verstappen trundled down the pit lane behind the safety car, he picked up a rogue nail embedded in one of his tyres. Once he had brought the RB22 to a halt, the Dutchman immediately radioed his team to report the critical issue.

"There's a nail in my tyre," the four-time F1 drivers' champion said. Race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase immediately asked whether it was the front-left, to which the 72-time grand prix winner confirmed, "Front-left." The mechanics waiting trackside with cooling equipment had already spotted the nail themselves, given it was hardly difficult to miss on the Red Bull Racing machine.
Fortunately, regulations working in Verstappen's favour allowed for tyre changes during a red-flag neutralisation, negating a potentially disastrous scenario. Verstappen opted for a fresh, nail-free set of intermediates, while some of his rivals went straight onto slick tyres for the restart before a subsequent safety car allowed a smooth transition to slicks.
