Rivola Responds to Concerns Over 850cc MotoGP Bike Speeds

The top bosses at Aprilia and Ducati have maintained a diplomatic stance when faced with growing suggestions that the costly switch to 850cc engines for the 2027 MotoGP season has already failed to significantly reduce cornering speeds.

Ahead of the Indonesian Grand Prix weekend, Massimo Rivola of Aprilia Racing alongside Ducati general manager Gigi Dall'Igna faced media scrutiny during a special press conference. They were questioned about the millions being invested into developing supposedly slower machinery that early indications show are already registering lap times remarkably close to the current 1000cc generation.

Initial track tests have highlighted that tyres remain the definitive factor in cornering performance, rather than overall engine displacement. Rivola's initial reaction signaled that this dilemma had crossed his mind repeatedly, prompting a cautious and measured response.

"It's better to look forward rather than backwards, since it's done," said the Aprilia CEO, choosing to emphasize the anticipated drop in straightline velocity. He pointed out previous telemetry data, stating, "Marco [Bezzecchi] and Jorge [Martin] did 368.6 km/h at Mugello and it's quite a lot. So removing more or less 50 [horsepower] for sure is going to reduce that speed."

Rivola further elaborated on the early feedback gathered from riders testing the prototype machinery. "From what we are seeing, as you say, lap time seems to be quite fast still. At the same time, the comment of the riders is that the bike is easier. So maybe they can handle a bit better and have some more savings at the same time," he concluded.
