Red Bull Racing is reportedly monitoring the contract situation of Oscar Piastri as part of a long-term contingency strategy for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The interest comes amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding the future of Max Verstappen and Red Bull’s evaluation of its competitiveness under the new technical regulations.
Although the 2026 campaign has only recently begun, the Formula 1 driver market is already showing signs of movement, particularly after Verstappen publicly expressed concerns about the direction of the latest technical regulations. Red Bull’s position during the new power unit era is expected to play a decisive role in Verstappen’s long-term commitment to the team.
The major upgrade package introduced by Red Bull during the Miami Grand Prix was viewed internally as a positive development for the RB22 project. However, the Milton Keynes-based squad is still believed to be preparing alternative scenarios should circumstances change over the next two seasons. According to Motorsport.com Italy, Piastri has emerged as one of the key names under consideration.

Piastri remains contracted to McLaren F1 Team until the end of 2027. Nevertheless, recent Formula 1 history has repeatedly shown that elite driver agreements can become negotiable if major competitive or career priorities shift.
From a performance standpoint, Piastri has established himself as one of the most consistent drivers on the current grid. His tyre management, setup adaptability, and race execution have become major strengths for McLaren in its fight against Red Bull, Ferrari, and Mercedes. Those qualities are understood to be central to Red Bull’s growing interest in the Australian driver.
The same report also suggested former Red Bull driver and current Piastri manager Mark Webber has quietly explored several long-term options behind the scenes. Webber’s longstanding relationship with Red Bull dating back to his Formula 1 career is considered a potentially influential factor.
The reported interest in Piastri also appears to reflect a broader strategic shift within Red Bull under team principal Laurent Mekies. In recent years, the organisation became strongly associated with promoting talent directly from its junior programme under Helmut Marko’s philosophy. However, Mekies is believed to favour a more flexible recruitment strategy to maintain long-term competitiveness.
Despite the speculation, there are currently no concrete indications that Verstappen intends to leave Red Bull in the near future. As a result, the interest in Piastri remains at an exploratory stage rather than formal negotiations. However, with the incoming regulation cycle potentially reshaping the Formula 1 competitive order, Red Bull is expected to continue preparing multiple contingency plans ahead of the 2027 season.
