Red Bull Drop ADUO Complaints to Chase Three-Tenths Deficit in F1

The 2026 Formula 1 world championship continues to showcase the deeply entrenched competitive DNA within the Red Bull squad. Amid ongoing technical regulation debates and controversies surrounding the ADUO system that have dominated the paddock discussions, the Milton Keynes-based outfit chose to channel all their energy away from boardroom disputes and directly into pure on-track performance development.

Controversy initially arose when the FIA designated Red Bull's internal combustion engine as the premier power unit on the starting grid. That official status effectively barred the team from modifying their power unit hardware, creating a stark contrast against rivals like Mercedes, who were permitted to introduce upgraded power unit specifications utilizing their available ADUO token. While the situation prompted strong feedback to the governing body—with single-seater director Nick Tombazis admitting the system requires revisions for upcoming seasons—the team quickly pivoted their mindset.

The definitive response arrived on the tarmac in Malaysia, where Max Verstappen delivered the team's maiden victory of the season through pure, unadulterated pace. Although he briefly surrendered two positions off the start line to the chasing Mercedes cars, the Dutch driver brilliantly fought his way back to the front, controlling the race and building a commanding gap before a late Safety Car neutralized the final stages.

Team principal Laurent Mekies expressed immense pride in how his squad has upheld its traditional strengths of in-season car development and rapid progression. “The ADUO? We stopped complaining and focused on pure competition,” the Red Bull team principal stated, as reported by Motorsport.com. “Ultimately, we prefer to find ourselves in the position of having a powerful engine and not benefiting from the ADUO rather than having a weak engine and resorting to the ADUO. There was a huge amount of development work behind the scenes, even if it is not possible to modify the hardware. I imagine this applies particularly to us, in our very first year of activity regarding power units.”

This remarkable recovery rate highlights the engineering prowess housed within the Milton Keynes factory as the season progresses. “Once again this team managed to develop in an incredible way this season,” Mekies added. “At the beginning of the year we were a second behind, but recovering through development is Red Bull's trademark. At a certain point we believed we would stop at three tenths from the top, but by working on everything, from the power unit to the chassis, we managed to bridge the gap. The Baku update played a part in this, but it is part of a broader effort by everyone to get more.”
