Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has cast doubt on whether Isack Hadjar will be fit for next weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. The Frenchman is still recovering from a wrist injury picked up during a boxing session in the summer break.
The injury forced him to miss the Dutch Grand Prix last month, and for the second consecutive race, Liam Lawson is standing in at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza this weekend. Red Bull provided an update on Hadjar's recovery on Friday.
“Look, Isack is okay. He can't drive now, so obviously, I'm not going to tell you he's happy—because he's not,” Mekies told Canal+. “The absolute priority is his recovery. We have no reason to take risks with it. His season so far has been fantastic, he's very young, and he improves every time he drives the car, so it's important for him to return when he's 100 percent.”
Mekies stressed the team will follow medical advice and the driver's own feelings. “We'll take whatever time is required, trust his feeling and the doctors' guidance. We'll soon laugh about this, I'm sure,” he added. However, he admitted that targeting the Spanish GP in Madrid on September 11-13 is “tricky.”
“Madrid is a few days from now, so that's tricky. We'll reevaluate his situation, but targeting Madrid probably is tricky,” Mekies said. “We're taking things one race at a time and looking at it together in a more rational way. The priority, what will influence our decision, is being sure he returns at 100 percent with zero risks for his future.”
If Hadjar is not fit, Lawson will continue to deputise at Red Bull, with Yuki Tsunoda replacing Lawson at sister team Racing Bulls. Hadjar has also received advice from seven-time MotoGP champion Marc Marquez, who knows a thing or two about dealing with injuries and urged the young Frenchman not to rush back and risk further damage.
Should Hadjar miss a third consecutive race, he would have nearly three weeks before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 24-26. Baku marks the start of three consecutive triple headers that will close out the 2026 F1 season, making his return a crucial decision for both the team and the driver's future.
