Raul Fernandez has admitted that his disappointing performance in Practice for the MotoGP Misano was his own fault. The Trackhouse Aprilia rider could only manage 12th place, far from expectations after winning at Silverstone.
That result forces Fernandez to go through Q1 in tomorrow's qualifying, while the other two Aprilias—with Ai Ogura absent again and not replaced by Trackhouse—made it into the top 10. It's a bitter blow for the Spaniard, who had been impressive at Silverstone.
“For sure it is not the result that we expected, but it was my mistake today,” said Fernandez after the Practice session. “I was in the top six or seven all session, but in the last run I made two or three mistakes in the last two or three laps and couldn't improve my time. So, it was my mistake.”
Fernandez also pointed to the setup change between FP1 and Practice that didn't suit his riding style. “The feeling is also not what I expected. The change we made between FP1 and Practice doesn't help my riding style,” he added. He stressed that the improvements must come from himself rather than the bike. “It's more my job than the bike's. In some corners I'm not on the line I need to turn the bike. The good thing is I have really good data from Marco Bezzecchi—I will study it tonight and tomorrow I'll try to find a solution in terms of lines.”
Misano is perhaps best known for its high-speed turn 11 and the sequence of slowing right-handers it sets up, but Fernandez's problems were more apparent in the tight corners in the first part of the lap. “Especially in the first sector I'm not taking the good line in the first corner and it doesn't heal until the back straight. So, there I think is the compromise that I need to find for tomorrow,” he explained. He added, “In the fast ones, for example in the fast part of the track I am second in sector three. So, I feel good, but where I have more problems is the first and second sector. It's a consequence of the first and second corners.”
Nevertheless, Fernandez remains calm and confident he can bounce back. “It is more my line, so I need to be calm. The good thing is when you get good results, you know that if you have everything under control and you have calm, everything will come again. So I believe that tomorrow everything will come easier than today,” he concluded.
With this result, Fernandez must work extra hard in Q1 to secure a decent starting position. If he fails, his chances of competing in the main race will be even smaller. However, given his performance at Silverstone, a stunning comeback at Misano is not out of the question.
