Toyota displayed absolute dominance at the start of the WRC Rally Japan during the Asuke Special Stage (SS). The team locked out the top four positions, with Oliver Solberg setting the fastest time. Solberg edged out Sami Pajari by a mere 0.2 seconds, followed by Sébastien Ogier in third and Elfyn Evans in fourth.
Technically, the extremely slippery track surface was the primary challenge for all drivers. Although Pajari was quicker during the opening part of the stage, the momentum shifted in Solberg's favor toward the end. The intensity of the competition was highlighted by the narrow 1.1-second gap separating the top four riders, indicating that Toyota's vehicle setup was highly optimized for the low-traction Japanese asphalt.
Sami Pajari reported critical technical risks encountered while navigating concrete drains located in the middle of the road. Pajari struck these drains at high speed, which nearly resulted in a puncture. This incident emphasizes the importance of precise racing line selection in the Asuke SS to avoid wheel component damage that could severely compromise overall lap times.

Hyundai's Thierry Neuville finished fifth, trailing Solberg's benchmark by 2.2 seconds. Neuville identified a significant technical issue with understeer in the final section of the stage. This understeer indicates a need for suspension adjustments or weight distribution tweaks to improve cornering agility and avoid further struggles throughout the weekend.
A major setback occurred for Takamoto Katsuta, who ran wide in a slippery corner. The incident caused damage to the left rear corner of the car, including a broken left rear wheel. Mechanically, this damage increases the risk of a puncture during the morning loop, forcing Katsuta to drive more conservatively despite dropping 6.7 seconds behind the lead.
With five more special stages remaining on Friday, Toyota is well-positioned to maintain its lead. The team's primary focus will be on ensuring wheel reliability and optimizing grip on the inconsistent asphalt surface. The event will conclude on Sunday, determining the ultimate winner of Rally Japan.
